Application of aluminum hydroxide in modified thermoplastic industry

Application of aluminum hydroxide in modified thermoplastic industry

  • 2020-11-30

Aluminum hydroxide can be classified into two grades, industrial grade and pharmaceutical grade. It has a wide range of uses, especially in the modified thermoplastic industry.

1. Application of aluminum hydroxide in unsaturated polyester

In glass fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester cast plastics (such as various high-voltage or low-voltage electrical switches), aluminum hydroxide is used as a filler to make plastic products have flame retardancy, smoke suppression and arc resistance.

It is also used in FRP laminates, such as FRP tiles, pipes, storage tanks, etc., with good flame retardant effects.

2. Application of aluminum hydroxide in epoxy resin

In epoxy resin, aluminum hydroxide has a good flame retardant effect. The dosage is 40%~60%, and the oxygen index is twice as high as that of unfilled epoxy resin.

At the same time, the arc resistance and arc resistance are enhanced. The epoxy resin filled with it has a very bright future in transformers, insulation equipment, switchgear and so on.

3.Application of aluminum hydroxide in cross-linked polyethylene and ethylene-propylene rubber cable

In these high polymers, because they are filled with aluminum hydroxide, their flame retardancy is improved, and they have excellent electrical insulation properties, they are widely used.

4. Application of aluminum hydroxide in latex and adhesive

Latex rubber and carboxylated latex adhesives for carpet padding are the earlier markets for aluminum hydroxide, and the consumption in this area is still in the leading position.

It also replaces calcium carbonate and clay with low flame retardancy in pre-coating, adhesives and foam materials as flame retardant fillers.

Generally 100 parts of latex plus 20~150 parts of aluminum hydroxide with a particle size of 3-20μm,

Add 75~250 parts to the adhesive. It is estimated that latex precipitation will still be a large consumer of aluminum hydroxide in the future.

5.Application of aluminum hydroxide in PVC

The most researched  area of aluminum hydroxide in thermoplasticity is polyvinyl chloride. Aluminum hydroxide can replace calcium carbonate fillers and can easily be incorporated into plasticized PVC.

There are two ways to achieve high standards of flame retardancy: one is the combined use of aluminum hydroxide and phosphoric carboxylate plasticizer, the other is the combination of aluminum hydroxide and zinc borate. These formulations have been applied to PVC wires Cable material. Adding aluminum hydroxide to hard PVC is mainly used to suppress smoke.

6. Application of aluminum hydroxide in polyethylene, polystyrene, ABS thermoplastic

Aluminum hydroxide has been used in calcium-plastic panels for flame-retardant decoration and has achieved good results.

However, in these thermoplastics, the additive amount of aluminum hydroxide when used alone must reach more than 60% to show certain flame retardancy, and the impact strength of the plastic will be seriously affected. Therefore, the application of aluminum hydroxide in these thermoplastics is still a subject of continued research.

7. Application of aluminum hydroxide in synthetic rubber

In synthetic rubbers such as styrene butadiene rubber and neoprene, aluminum hydroxide makes a good flame retardant.

Such as flame-retardant cable sheath formulation: 100 parts of neoprene, 70 parts of clay, 30 parts of calcium carbonate, 100 parts of aluminum hydroxide, 15 parts of zinc borate, 10 parts of antimony trioxide, 5 parts of zinc oxide, 4 parts of magnesium oxide , 5 parts of isocyanurate, 0.5 parts of Na-22, 2 parts of stearic acid. The final product has an oxygen index of 50 and excellent vertical and horizontal combustion.

Whether aluminum hydroxide is used in any industry, attention should be paid to its dosage and correct use method, so that it can achieve the expected use effect, otherwise it may be counterproductive.
