Application of aluminum hydroxide flame retardant in rubber

  • 2020-11-30
With the advancement of science and technology, the use of rubber continues to expand. Wires, cable sheaths, rubber ropes, conveyor belts, rubber products used in the electronic and electrical industries, and rubber sheets used in public places have become more demanding for the flame retardant properties of rubber products.

As a kind of filler, when aluminum hydroxide is added to rubber, it can cause defects in the rubber, which is prone to stress concentration, leads to a decrease in the elongation and tensile strength of the rubber. When aluminum hydroxide is blended with rubber, the phase interface of the two materials is difficult to form a good interface bond.

A large amount of filling is bound to cause great damage to the physical and mechanical properties of rubber.

Combining ATH, chlorinated paraffin and Sb2 O3, the inorganic flame retardant ATH can achieve higher flame retardant requirements without a high filling proportion, while without affecting the physical and mechanical properties of the rubber.

Relevant experts have proved through experiments that when ATH and Sb2 O3 are used together, the flame retardancy of rubber is ideal.

When the amount of (ATH+Sb2 O3) is 50 parts, the LOI of the rubber is 31, its tensile strength is 6.3MPa, the elongation at break is 660%, the tear strength is 23.7kN/m, and the hardness of Shaoer A is 57°, the amount of smoke generated during combustion reaches C level.

The combined use of ATH and MoO3 can significantly reduce the amount of smoke generated, so that the amount of smoke generated when the rubber is burned reaches A level, but it cannot significantly improve its flame retardant performance.

In addition, ATH with a fine particle size can also effectively improve the oxygen index, tensile strength, tensile stress and other properties of SBR.

Aluminum hydroxide flame retardant has the advantages of non-toxic, good stability, no toxic gas at high temperature, and can reduce the amount of smoke when plastic is burned.

And the dehydration endothermic temperature is relatively low, about 170-350℃, so the flame retardant effect is significant when the plastic just starts to burn.

At the same time, the product is cheap and has a wide range of sources, so in recent years, it has developed rapidly in the flame retardant market at home and abroad. The global flame retardant consumption is nearly 1.4 million tons, of which 85% are additive flame retardants and 15% are reactive flame retardants. It will continue to grow at an average annual rate of 5% in the next five years.
